Our wedding was in St Catharines Ontario in the Niagara wine region of Canada. Our theme involved lavender and an Italian vineyard. We even had our engagement photos in a lavender field!
We had a gathering of 120 friends and family to celebrate the union of two cultures: Italian and Caribbean. Our wedding had many personal touches including a wine featured during the ceremony from our favorite winery in the Niagara region, personalized M&M’s with our photo on it, a bouquet adorned with photos of my late grandmother, father, and brother-in-law.
We jumped the broom together which is a wedding ritual in which a couple leaps over a broom after their vows to symbolize their union and a new beginning. The tradition has deep roots in African-Canadian and American history where it was used by enslaved people who couldn’t legally marry. Today, black people often incorporate this tradition to honor their ancestors and provide a symbolic cleansing of past hardships before building a new life together.
We also had tabletops name plate corks with our names engraved, a bomboniere of an Italian wine plate, and cork purchased in the Amalfi Coast which was a city we visited together the year prior. We celebrated with a Caribbean black rum cake and Italian confetti from Sulmona which was another city in Italy we visited and the region where Anthony’s family is from.
We had a Vogue photo booth for guests with a cover written in both Italian and English. I surprised Anthony by hiring a second florist to create a ceiling installation as well as surprised him with my second Kleinfeld dress which was introduced during our slide show!
During our honeymoon in Paris, Anthony surprised me with a professional photographer to take photos in front of the Eiffel Tower. Quelle vacance magnifique!
