High School of Fashion Industries

For the past three years, Kleinfeld has worked closely with the High School of Fashion Industries to provide students with an opportunity to see their designs come to life within a renowned couture environment. Yesterday, Kleinfeld’s salon was transformed once again into a runway where three competition finalists could showcase their bridal designs before the eyes of several industry gurus. This year’s finalists included Hadassa Dorcean, Lashun Costor, and Stacy Isaacs.

An initial welcome was provided by Robert di Mauro, welcoming the audience and providing background on HSFI. After establishing the Industry Partnership Program (IPP) in 2006 to bridge HSFI and the fashion industry, Robert has continually helped to pioneer the school and get talented fashion students the exposure and experience they need to succeed in the industry. Faculty member and beloved teacher, Sandra Manning later highlighted the graciousness of Robert’s dedication: “This man puts his blood, sweat and tears into the school. I’m just very thankful that Robert di Mauro is in our lives.”

The competition was soon turned over to charismatic HSFI fashion design student, Neville Boasiako as he took off as the MC for the evening.  Before long, three breathtaking gowns, each with a very different personality, made their way down the runway. The extraordinary talent that these three young designers exuded certainly made it tough on the judges.

This year’s judge’s panel consisted of:

Michelle Roth - Bridal Designer

Diane Forden - Editor and Chief of Bridal Guide Magazine

Carmen Marc Valvo - Fashion Designer

Cheryl Wills - NY1 Reporter

Terry Hall - Kleinfeld Fashion Director

Mara Urshel - Co-owner of Kleinfeld

Madeline Gardner - Bridal Designer

Robert di Mauro - Lifestyle Commentator

Sandra Manning - HSFI Teacher

After careful deliberation, Hadassa’s bias cut silk charmeuse sheath gown with a fitted bodice was deemed the winner. Her design was inspired by the idea that “love can come from anywhere.” Kleinfeld Co-owner, Mara Urshel, described the winning gown saying it was “very modern, really combines sexy and glamour." Overwhlemed with the honor, Hadassa shed tears of joy as she was presented with a winning prize and a bouquet of two-dozen pink roses.

Hadassa with her Winning Design

At the end of the special night, the participants along with friends, family, faculty, and judges all mingled in the salon to share the excitement. When it was thought that smiles couldn’t get any larger, the announcement for Hadassa to come cut the Lazaro-inspired cake topped off the evening. The beautiful cake designed by Made In Heaven Cakes flawlessly captured a sherbet-hued Lazaro dress. And believe me, the taste was just as magical as the presentation!
