Christmas Getaways & New Years Escapes!

Recently, I have been asked a few times for my top suggestions this holiday season for a Christmas getaway and New Years escape and I would love to share my top pick for each!

My favorite idea for a Christmas getaway this holiday season is the Düsseldorf/Cologne area in Germany. I absolutely love Germany and spent 5 wonderful months living there. Luckily for me, I was there during the Christmas season and was able to experience their wonderful Christmas Markets!

The markets are beautifully lit in the heart of many German towns and offer great seasonal treats like my personal favorite, Glühwein! (Glühwein is warmed German wine, which I was hesitant of at first and addicted to shortly after.) The markets also offer great gifts and cultural Christmas decorations.

In my opinion, the Düsseldorf/Cologne area is one of the best places to experience these markets. The Dom Cathedral in downtown Cologne is breathtaking and adds such a stunning setting to a Christmas getaway! To fully enjoy the experience, I would suggest staying at one of the more beautiful and convenient places in the area, like the Breidenbacher Hof in Düsseldorf. The hotel is nothing short of spectacular and makes for the perfect surrounding during your getaway. Be sure to take a romantic carriage ride and even ice skate in the beautiful winter wonderland!

For an escape this coming New Year, my favorite idea is absolutely Sydney, Australia! When it is winter here in the US, it is summer in the land down-under, making it great for a winter “escape”. I know some of us are ready to trade in bulky winter jackets and boots for sun dresses and flip flops and summer time in Sydney means days at the beach, picnics in their many parks and warm evenings to enjoy wonderful dining, excellent night life and music festivals! Besides the great weather, Sydney is perfect for New Years because of their incredible, world famous fireworks over the Sydney Harbor!

Sydney also puts you amongst the first people in the world to ring in the New Year – a real excuse to boast to friends back home! My suggestion for a great place to celebrate the New Year in Sydney is the Park Hyatt.

It offers some of THE BEST views of the fireworks over Sydney harbor and Opera House and of course the accommodations are top notch!

I hope these suggestions can help you and yours enjoy a truly glorious holiday season! For more information about traveling during the holiday season or to book a trip, feel free to contact me at caroleanneh@vwti.com or 212-592-1376.

I'd love to hear from you as well! Are any of you getting married on destination this holiday season? Tell me all the details!

Carole Anne knows what she is talking about! The Christmas markets in Koln are definitely making the atmosphere of the holidays special!!!! And Gluhwein which we also have here in Poland is irreplaceable necessity for cold winter evenings :) I miss the times when we were there and truly recommend everyone to experience it while in Germany! Overall when there is a lot of snow, all places in the world feel special for Christmas, and definitely my home here in Poland is like that now! I wish Carole Anne and other friends from the GlobalMBA could be together here now!
